Insight Anthology

Presented by Steve Caudill, Enterprise Project Architect

and Russ Mullen, Senior Project Manager

Tired of requirements that change faster than you can deliver? Frustrated with complex design tools that take too long to understand and use? Having trouble getting feedback on your designs? We've been there too, and after seeing too many projects fail because of these problems, we vowed to stop using tools that didn't work, no matter how industry-standard they were. This approach has evolved to become Insight Anthology, a collection of techniques that predict project outcomes using a systematic application of techniques.

In a complex systems project, you're highest risk of failure comes from two places; things you don’t know, and things you don’t know you don’t know, often described as first and second order ignorance. Insight Anthology resulted from the pursuit of eliminating both of these forms of ignorance.

To determine the project’s outcome, you must combine what you have (budget, time, resources) with what you know (the business, the goals, the constraints).  In recent years, this pursuit has produced highly complex tools and modeling systems aimed at reducing ignorance and facilitating documentation. However, these complex tools attempt to think for you instead of facilitating your thoughts.

With Insight Anthology, we use rudimentary, simple tools covering systems analysis, design, project underwriting, and enterprise systems architecture methodologies and combine them in ways that facilitate the thinking process.

Is this method perfect? Of course not, but it’s designed specifically with imperfection in mind. Insight Anthology captures imperfect knowledge, incomplete information, and impractical plans, producing a structure that accurately portrays both what you know about every aspect of your project and what you don’t know. Naturally this whole has gaps, but knowing where the gaps are means you know what you don’t know, which can help you intelligently perfect the imperfections. With this knowledge, you can effectively apply resources to your projects and accurately predict the outcome.
